Photographer Peter Lindbergh Passes Away at 74

He most recently worked with Meghan Markle for British "Vogue"'s "Forces For Change" September issue.

Legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh has passed away at the age of 74 on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The sad news was announced on his Instagram account.

"He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph and seven grandchildren," said the caption. "He leaves a big void."

Lindbergh has long been one of the most sought-after photographers in the fashion industry, known for his work with the Pirelli calendar, luxury campaigns, supermodel-era editorials and signature black-and-white portraits of major fashion figures and celebrities, including Kate Moss. He was also admired and known for advocating against photo retouching, as well as his preference for shooting outdoors.

"How devastating to learn that we have lost Peter, a generous, lovely bear of a man, who as much as any photographer, defined how we see fashion in our modern era," said Anna Wintour for Vogue.com. The editor-in-chief has been a longtime collaborator of Lindbergh, who shot her first (and iconic) Vogue cover in November 1988.

Lindbergh most recently worked with Meghan Markle for British "Vogue"'s "Forces For Change" September issue, as the Duchess of Sussex personally chose the photographer to shoot 15 women on the publication's cover.

"There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life," said the tribute post's caption on the Royal Highness's official Instagram account. "'Forces for Change' was the one of the esteemed photographer's final published projects. He will be deeply missed."
