UPDATE: This Pink Diamond Is The Most Expensive Ever Sold
Update 4/5/17: The flawless Pink Star diamond has officially sold - for a record-breaking $71.2 million - at the Sotheby's Hong Kong auction house, making it the most expensive gemstone sold at auction, according to Luxury Listings NYC.
As the largest flawless fancy pink diamond the Gemological Institute of America has ever examined, the Pink Star was sold to Hong-Kong based jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook.
The Pink Star diamond originally sold for $83.2 million in 2013 to diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, but because he defaulted on payments, two diamond companies have partially taken ownership. The diamond has since been kept at Sotheby's.

Behold, a closeup of the diamond - known as the Pink Star diamond - in all its pink glory:
Sotheby's actually sold the Pink Star in 2013 to diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, but he defaulted on the $83.2 million payment. Since then, the diamond has been partially owned by two diamond companies and stored at Sotheby's, according to Luxury Listings NYC. The current record for the most expensive polished diamond sold is the $58 million Oppenheimer Blue diamond, which sold last year to a private collector.
The diamond was originally mined by De Beers in 1999, and was a 132.5 carat rough diamond before being cut and polished. The upcoming auction will take place April 4.
