Pizza saves another life: Delivery driver rescues woman from alleged attempted kidnapping
Pizza has saved countless lives.
In 1994, the civil rights hero Rosa Parks was robbed and assaulted in her home when she was 81 — and afterward, Mike Ilitch, the founder of Little Caesars pizza, heard that she had moved to a safer apartment and then quietly paid her rent for nearly 10 years. In 2016, a man’s life was saved when Domino’s Pizza realized he hadn’t placed an order in two weeks, which was unlike him; a delivery driver went to check on him, found out he had a medical emergency, and called 911. An 82-year-old pizza lover was saved when her delivery drivers realized she hadn’t ordered in two days after she suffered a fall in her home in 2011.
Now, pizza — or rather, a pizza delivery driver in Waldo, Wis. — is being credited with saving a woman from an attempted kidnapping, police say.
According to the Sheboygan Press, a delivery driver was greeted at a customer’s house by a couple. As the man was paying for their pizza, the driver noticed the woman had a black eye. She then reportedly mouthed to the driver “help me” and “call the police.”
The delivery driver notified the police and, shortly after, sheriff’s deputies of the Sheboygan County sheriff’s department arrived. They could hear the woman screaming from inside “help me” and “please come in.”
The man reportedly involved, 55-year-old Dean Hoffman, eventually let deputies into the home and was arrested. He remains in custody. According to the sheriff’s office, Hoffman was attempting to persuade the woman to get back into a relationship with him. He had allegedly entered her home earlier during that day, punched her, and tied her up using a power cord.
Hoffman will face charges of suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment, strangulation and suffocation, felony intimidation of a victim, and burglary.
