The poignant reason behind one man's obsession with Britney Spears: 'She's always supported me'
David LeCours II has seen Britney Spears in concert about 14 times. “I am majorly obsessed with Britney Spears,” he explains. “I could watch her in a chair doing nothing and I’d still go… I’m definitely one of Britney’s biggest fans.”
It all began when he was a child — 3 years old, to be exact, which is when he first saw her in concert. “I remember, like, crying when the show was over,” LeCours says, adding that his earliest memory is dancing to “Baby One More Time.”
Today, he says, “Her music is something I listen to from the minute I wake up to the minute I go to bed. Her music can make me happy no matter what I’m going through.” He also surrounds himself with memorabilia of the pop star — posters, CDs, dolls, and stacks of T-shirts. “I think 80 percent of my wardrobe is all Britney related.”
LeCours explains that feeling like an outsider as a gay youth really cemented his connection to Spears. “I was bullied a lot for being different. I didn’t have many friends, so I just kind of had her,” he says. “I was struggling a lot with my sexuality…and at school it got to a point where I couldn’t handle it… I kept questioning why I was on this earth.”
To lift his spirits, his mother bought him a meet-and-greet for Spears’ show in Las Vegas. When he met her during the photo-op, he handed her a letter telling her how much she means to him. “I was shaking, I was very, very nervous,” LeCours recalls. And as he walked away, a security guard caught up with him and said that Spears wanted his address so she could send him a token of her appreciation. Not long after that, he received a letter in the mail.
“She basically said that she was so thankful to have a fan like me and that the letter meant everything to her, and that she was very proud of me for coming out and that she was glad that she could help me, and to always follow my dreams,” he says.

The hopeful last line of her letter, “Shine Bright Always,” so touched the fan that he got it tattooed on his arm.
LeCours says he proudly posted a picture of the letter on Instagram when he went to sleep; when he woke up, he was surprised to find it was going viral. “It was crazy,” he recalls.
“Some people don’t understand the love I have for her, and what another person can do for your life,” he explains. “She’s always supported me, and I feel like if I think nobody is proud of me or believes in me, she does.”
That was especially true during his last meeting with Spears — someone he’s been fortunate enough to meet a total of four time. “Before I left, she grabbed my hand and she told me that she’s proud of me, and if I ever doubt that anyone is proud of me, know that she is.”
