A police officer's simple act of kindness at gas station goes viral
A St. Clair Shores, Mich., police officer is being hailed as a hero after a Facebook post praising his simple act of kindness took off.
Officer Todd Bing was waiting behind Delores Marotta in line at a Citgo gas station when he heard her ask the attendant inside for $3 of gas to put in her car, WWJ reports. According to a Facebook post from the owner of the gas station, the officer noticed that the woman, who was using a cane, had a difficult time walking back to her vehicle, so he told her to wait in her car and he would pump the gas for her.
Bing and Marotta struck up a conversation, and he learned that her husband had recently died. She had trouble making ends meet at the end of every month, and $3 was all she had available for gas.
Bing asked her to wait a moment while he went inside. He gave the station’s owner, Seth Kasyouhanan, $20 out of his own pocket to go toward Delores’s tank.
Kasyouhanan took to Facebook to share the heartwarming moment and also appreciate the officer’s compassion.
“This $20 really helped her! She would of most likely ended up running out of gas,” Kasyouhanan wrote. “Nowadays there’s so much negativity towards police officers. … I’m not saying every officer is perfect, I’m sure some are at fault at times. We all make mistakes- but we should all respect, appreciate, and thank them for what they do… To all the men and women in blue I THANK YOU for your service!”
Kasyouhanan has set up a GoFundMe page for Marotta, writing, “[Delores is] roughly short $1000 on her bills every month. Some days she has money for gas and groceries and some days she doesn’t. I believe it’s only right to help someone that’s struggling.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, he’s reached over $3,600 of his $5,000 goal.
