Political slogan tee strikes at NYFW: 'Vote for Cynthia' Nixon

Christian Siriano mixed politics with fashion once again at New York Fashion Week. During the designer’s Spring 2019 show on Saturday night, guests sat down to “Cynthia for NY” promotional cards on their seats inside Gotham Hall in New York City.

The cards referred to former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon, who is challenging longtime New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the state’s Democratic primary on Sept. 13. Soon enough, Nixon took her seat in the front row, alongside a diverse group of celebrities: Tiffany Haddish, Coco Rocha, Whoopi Goldberg, Danielle Brooks, Carmen Electra, Sarah Hyland, and Judith Light.

The show opened with a mixture of tropical print dresses and trousers, coupled with wide-brim sun hats worn by a diverse and inclusive group of models, including plus-size model Candice Huffine. The collection escalated to showcase woven bamboo suits with raffia-style pockets (which seemed to catch Nixon’s eye as she clapped softly).

Then about halfway through the show, a model strutted out wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Vote for Cynthia.” The crowd clapped and cheered.

Male models wearing gender fluid looks — sheer leopard tops and sheer black dresses — came out next. But Siriano’s signature red-carpet gowns were the real showstoppers, including three flamingo pink gowns made with crystal details and floral organza, and a gorgeous palm green draped bodice and tiered tulle gown.

But Siriano was saving his biggest statement for last. During his finale walk, the designer opened his jacket to reveal a black T-shirt that read, “I’m voting for Cynthia.” This political move isn’t surprising for Siriano; he has previously used his catwalk for political causes. In February 2017, during his Fall 2017 collection, and shortly after Donald Trump was sworn in as president, Siriano unveiled a set of political statement tees that read, “People are People.” One-hundred percent of the proceeds from that shirt were donated to the American Civil Liberties Union. The shirt debuted during the controversy surrounding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and the “Dreamers” who faced deportation threats.

In Siriano’s program notes, he gave a special thanks to Cynthia Nixon “for all you’re doing for New York.” Will Siriano’s support for Nixon play out in the votes? Time will tell. The New York gubernatorial primary election is only a few days away.
