The town of Elmira has expanded its swim lessons for kids this summer. Swim lessons for ages four and up will be offered from 11-11:45 a.m. and noon to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. Swimming lessons can be booked in two-week sessions throughout July and August.

“We wanted to expand the lessons because they’re very popular,” said Elmira town supervisor Ann Gerould. “The governor is very concerned that kids learn how to swim, and I agree. It’s a life skill kids need to learn. We’re excited to get the season started.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget proposal included $150 million in grants across the state to increase safe swimming sites and reduce child drownings. The plan featured millions of dollars in grants to build or renovate public pools in high-needs areas.

The Town of Elmira plans to dive into those funding sources.

“The governor has set aside quite a bit of money to rehab existing pools and fund new builds,” said Gerould. “There’s some grants associated with that I’m seeking to help offset costs related to our pool.”
