Jenny McCarthy Was Starstruck Over The Popcorn's True Identity
After a season of show-stopping performances, The Masked Singer was down to its final six contestants on Dec. 2. And, of the six, only three would be lucky enough to move on to the finals in two weeks. Sadly, the Popcorn was not one of the lucky ones. In a sing-off with The Sun, Popcorn's rendition of "Better Be Good to Me" just wasn't enough to win judges' and fans' votes. Of course, this means we were finally able to learn who is the Popcorn. And one judge was particularly excited about the reveal.
So who is the Popcorn on The Masked Singer?
Well, as many thought from the get-go, it was an iconic singer. Just not Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauoper, or Mary Wilson. No, it was singer-songwriter Taylor Dayne, who rose to fame in the '80s with hits like "Tell It to My Heart," "Love Will Lead You Back," and "Prove Your Love."
Though not an initial guess, judge Jenny McCarthy guessed Dayne on Nov. 11, based on the clue about her friend having been on the show. Dayne is friends with Leah Remini, who has guest-judged the show before. Dayne was also in a movie called Stag, and there was a deer clue in the pre-performance package.
Some other clues that pointed to Dayne:
Cats in the package are a nod to Dayne’s role in the musical, Cats.
Matzo ball soup with bunny ears is a nod to Dayne’s victory over Joey Fatone (and her winning dish) in Celebrity Cook-Off.
The heart monitor is a hint to Dayne’s hit song, “With Every Beat of My Heart.”
Building a career around love, is a nod to the numerous love songs she has written and performed.
The '80s trends of a Rubik's Cube and hair crimper were a tribute to the decade where Dayne rose to fame.
Like any eliminated contestant, Dayne was sad to leave but grateful for her time on the show.
"You guys made me cry under this mask so many times," Dayne said after the judges lauded praise onto her.
Who will take home the golden mask? You'll have to watch The Masked Singer finale on Dec. 14 to find out.
