The Popular $150 Chocolate Cake Recipe That's Worth Every Penny
As a chocolate cake enthusiast, I'm someone who feels like I know a good chocolate cake when I taste one. Meant to be moist and rich all at once, chocolate cakes done right are sort of a kryptonite of mine. But just as easy as it is for me to know when a chocolate cake is a keeper, it's even easier for me to tell when one misses the mark.
So, when I stumbled upon a Reddit recipe for a $150 Chocolate Cake, I immediately hoped that the dessert would be worth its weight in gold. Now, of course, I'm sure you're thinking "Who would spend $150 on a chocolate cake?" and honestly, I'm right there with you. But just like the iconic $250 Neiman Marcus cookie, the price isn't really what you would spend on it or what I spent to make it.
A few Redditors theorized that the price in the recipe name is because the dessert is so rich, and once I read that, I knew I definitely had to give it a try. So, eager to understand the buzz, I hurried to the grocery store to gather the ingredients and got to work. Here's how it went.

How to Make the $150 Chocolate Cake
Start by creaming the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat your eggs and add them to the butter mixture, then mix in the melted chocolate. In a separate bowl, stir the dry ingredients together. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk to the chocolate and butter mixture mixture. Add the vanilla and nuts, and bake in a loaf pan at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes.
For the icing, mix the cream cheese until soft and smooth, then add in the sugar and mix until fluffy before adding the melted chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Spread on the cooled cake.

What I Thought About the $150 Chocolate Cake
Giving this vintage recipe a name of the $150 Chocolate Cake was right on point as it was as rich as its name suggests! And while I was a little skeptical about adding the coffee into the icing (I am not a coffee drinker and honestly don't like coffee-based anything), the addition of the strong coffee paired with the chocolate was perfect with the cake.
This cake truly was everything a chocolate cake is supposed to be: light, moist, rich and delicious. And the added fluff from the icing was the ideal finishing touch to the entire treat. It kind of gave tiramisu vibes, if I'm being completely honest. Overall, though, this is one chocolate cake I would definitely make again.
Tips for Making the $150 Chocolate Cake
1. Monitor your bake time. Though the recipe says to leave it in the oven for 40-45 minutes, I found mine to still be thoroughly undercooked leaving it in for that duration. I actually ended up leaving it in for an additional 20-30 minutes to make sure it cooked all the way through.
2. Sift your powdered sugar. Don't be like me and forget to sift the powdered sugar before adding it to your cream cheese or else you'll end up with clumps in your icing.
