A Potential Comeback for 'The Office' Might Look a Lot Different Than Fans Expect
It's been a decade since The Office went off the air, but the workplace sitcom continues to hold a special place in countless fans' hearts. In today's reboot-crazy world, some Office fans even want to see a new version of the show that revisits the daily antics at Dunder Mifflin. But Greg Daniels, the Emmy Award-winning writer who co-created the series, has a different idea.
Daniels told The Wrap that he's not really keen on rebooting the series and telling the same stories over again with different actors. Instead, he'd rather create an extended Office universe with a plethora of other stories to tell.
"I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot, you know what I mean?" he said honestly. "Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest."
His idea for the series, he said, would resemble The Mandalorian's place in the world of Star Wars. "The notion of maybe something like the way The Mandalorian is a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean? Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject," he explained. "That, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don’t even know what you would call that. I don’t know if that’s like a sister show or something. I don’t know what the term is. But it doesn’t feel like 'reboot' would be the appropriate term for that."
There currently aren't any plans to bring back The Office in any capacity, but never say never.
