Potential New Record for Largest Wave Ever Surfed (Video)
Pull out the (virtual) measuring tapes; there's a couple new contenders for the "largest wave surfed" title coming in hot from the weekend.
For now, it's all conjecture. But the claims are worth looking at.
So, while the internet runs wild with guesswork, there's multiple governing bodies to analyze the size of the waves, curate the biggest and best, and ultimately, hopefully, come to an agreement on which waves are big enough to be record-breaking.
The waves in question? They come from a session on February 24th, 2024, in Nazaré, Portugal, featuring Sebastian Steudtner, Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca, Kalani Lattanzi, and Gabriel Sampaio.
The conditions were not very gentle, to say the least. It was rough out there, by the looks of it. But there bombs to be had, and these dudes went for it.
“In conditions that were far beyond extreme, with winds howling and waves reaching heights that defy imagination, these warriors rode the unrideable,” Above Creators captioned the video. “Their performance was not just about surfing; it was a battle against nature, pushing the limits of what is humanly possible.”
As for the Guinness World Record for “Largest Wave Surfed,” Steudtner currently holds that title for an 86-footer at Nazaré back in October of 2020.
Could this session have a contender to challenge that record?
“Did we witness history?” Above Creators continued. “A new world record perhaps? While that remains to be confirmed, one thing is clear: February 24th, 2024, will be etched in the annals of surfing history as a day of monumental bravery and sheer force of will. The performances of Steudtner, Chumbo, Lattanzi, and Sampaio have left us all with our hearts in our hands, marveling at the human spirit's capacity to confront and ride the fury of nature.”
It's been almost four years since the last (confirmed) world record (by Guinness). Maybe a new one is on the horizon. One of these, seen above? Maybe.
