Pregnant woman performs CPR on husband days before giving birth
A pregnant woman saved her husband’s life after she found him “in distress and not breathing” — a day before she was set to give birth to the couple’s first child.
When Ashley Goette heard Andrew, her high school sweetheart, gasping for air in his sleep on Oct. 16, she called 911. Ashley was instructed by the dispatcher to perform CPR until the paramedics arrived. After they discovered Andrew was in cardiac arrest, he was rushed to United Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.
“In the first hours of treatment at the ER and ICU, the prognosis was dire,” according to a GoFundMe page describing the young family’s dramatic story. “CT and MRI scans, along with clinical signs, pointed to catastrophic brain injury. The team of specialists treating Andrew prepared the family for the worst…it was likely he would not wake up from this.”
Friends and family waited by the father-to-be’s bedside, before the ICU team got to work and lowered his body temperature to allow his brain to heal and, according to local affiliate Fox 9, put him in a medically induced coma.
“By his side the whole time was Ashley, calm and collected, telling him she would wait to have this baby until he woke up,” read the Team Goette GoFundMe page.
A day later, doctors warmed up Andrew’s body and removed his life support. As the nurse lowered his sedation, Andrew began to twitch. “Still thinking it could be shivering or a seizure his nurse Libby said ‘Andrew open your eyes’…and as if in a movie, he did exactly that,” according to the GoFundMe page.
Andrew gave a thumbs-up, and over the next 36 hours, he continued to recover as his wife prepared for the family’s second miracle. On Oct. 18, Ashley was induced.
Hospital staff made arrangements for Andrew, who needed to be under 24-hour monitoring, to move into Ashley’s laboring room. Also, his heart procedure was rescheduled so he could be with his wife for the birth.
Ashley was later moved from their shared room for a C-section. Lennon Andrew Goette was born on Oct. 19 at at 5:16 a.m. He weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces.
Three days later, Lennon’s father underwent heart surgery to resolve his arrhythmia.
The surgery was a success. However, the family has one final obstacle — paying for their medical care. The Goettes hope their GoFundMe page will raise the $25,000 needed to pay for the medical procedures that helped save one life and ensured the safe delivery of another.
