Was the president firing back at Meghan McCain with his tweet?
At Sen. John McCain’s memorial Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral, the senator’s daughter Meghan McCain gave a eulogy that, amid praise for her father, took a direct jab at President Trump and his campaign motto.
“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great,” said McCain, a talk-show host, to applause from those assembled.
And in a plot twist most of us saw coming, it seems the president heard her message, as he took to Twitter at 3:53 p.m. on Saturday to tweet his campaign slogan. In all caps. He also retweeted his own tweet Sunday morning.
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 1, 2018
The replies to his tweet were mixed, with many seeming to believe that it was a direct attack on the McCain family and the senator’s daughter’s comments at the service.
One of the top replies was the text from McCain’s eulogy, in a Twitter moment.

Many of those replying agreed with McCain, echoing her sentiments about America’s being great.
America was great before you. You didn’t make America Great.

It always was.
Maybe you should watch @MeghanMcCain – she talked about it yesterday while you were playing golf and the rest of the country was celebrating and American hero.https://t.co/5LX0m9OwEV— Tango Jane (@biglifejane) September 2, 2018

Quite a few put their own twist on the president’s July 2015 words about the senator’s time as a POW in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, “I like people who weren’t captured.”
I like Presidents who don’t take raises away from federal employees but spends tens of millions of taxpayers money to play golf every other day #AmericaWasAlwaysGreat

I like a President who doesn’t feel entitled

I like Presidents who represent the best in us rather than the worst in us. Who sacrifices for the greater good rather than navigates according to his family’s self interest. Who is kind and generous rather than mean and petty.

And some people showed support for the president’s statement, writing that he is more popular all the time.
I like Winning!! #trump2020 #TrumpTrain #trumpt

You are getting more popular by the day. We love ?? you Mr. President.

Saturday’s event in Washington, D.C., where John McCain lived and worked for more 40 years, was part of McCain’s five-day cross-country funeral procession. He died Aug. 25 at age 81.
Despite McCain’s service as both a senator and a Navy officer during the Vietnam War, the president hesitated to release an official statement acknowledging McCain’s contributions to the nation. He instead tweeted a short message offering his “deepest sympathies and respect” to the McCain family.
