President Trump Reacts to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Voting Video
In the weeks leading up to the 2020 election, Meghan Markle has been using her platform to implore her fans to vote. Yesterday, both she and Prince Harry appeared on the first ever Time100 TV special, where they emphasized the critical importance of casting a ballot this year.
“We’re six weeks out from the election, and today is voter registration day. Every four years, we’re told the same thing, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.’ But this one is,” Meghan said. “When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”
Prince Harry, who is not a U.S. citizen, and will not be voting this year, urged viewers to "reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity" in the lead up to November 3.
"What we consume, what we are exposed to, and what we engage with online, has a real effect on all of us," he said.
Neither Harry nor Meghan endorsed one candidate over another, but they are both engaging in the political discourse far more than is typical for members of the royal family. “The Duke is not a working member of the Royal Family and any comments he makes are made in a personal capacity,” Buckingham Palace said in response to the video.
The Sussexes' statement also sparked a reaction from President Trump, who was, apparently, less-than-pleased with their message. “I’m not a fan of hers,” Trump said of Meghan at a White House press briefing on Wednesday.
“And I would say this—and she probably has heard that—but I wish a lot of luck to Harry, because he’s gonna need it.”
