Primark is bringing sustainable education to its supply chain.

The UK fashion retailer has teamed with the Circular Textiles Foundation (CTF) to provide an “advanced training program” to its design and product teams. This education will encompass advanced circular design principles centered around recyclability to support Primark’s commitment to making more of its clothes recyclable by design by 2027.

“This is the next step for us at Primark to really start embedding circular design principles into the core of how we design and make our products. Our teams are really looking forward to honing their skills and understanding where we can elevate our designs through this bespoke new training,” said Nicholas Lambert, head of circularity at Primark. “We want to keep pushing our in-house designers and suppliers to create fun and innovative ways to elevate our clothes beyond what our customers may traditionally expect from us.”

This training will be available to Primark’s design and product teams as well as select suppliers who will review the Rita Ora collaborator’s clothing by category to understand how circular principles can be applied. The program aims to teach these teams how to use the core principles of circular design to different product categories, “adapting Primark’s approach based on the unique characteristics of each product type,” the Dublin-based company said.

The CTF, a non-profit advocating for the recyclability of clothing and textiles, will host a series of workshops to help “put the theory of a circular design into practice” and show employees ways to continue those practices in their day-to-day operations.

“Sharing knowledge is crucial to tackling the industry’s issues at pace and scale and this is where the Circular Textiles Foundation comes in. We are taking designing for recyclability mainstream, making it accessible and available to all,” said Tim Cross, founder of CTF. “We hope that by working with Primark we will take a step closer to encouraging industry-wide change. We look forward to Primark engaging with us on this journey and the opportunities for progress.”

This partnership builds off Primark’s first circular design training program, which was completed by over 500 members of the retailer’s product teams last year. That initial program, developed in collaboration with Circle Economy and the Sustainable Fashion Academy last April, was intended to educate Primark’s supply chain on the “basics” of a circular economy and its own Circular Product Standard.
