Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Reveal Baby Sussex’s Full Name
Stop the presses, people! After debuting their sweet firstborn son earlier in the day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just shared their royal baby’s full name with the world. The announcement comes shortly after their first family photocall at Windsor Castle and was delivered by way of the couple’s official Instagram account.
Per the Today Show, the couple waited to formally introduce their son by name until after he’d met Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Then, they took to Instagram to reveal baby Sussex’s moniker. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are pleased to announce they have named their first born child: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. This afternoon Their Royal Highnesses introduced Her Majesty The Queen to her eighth great-grandchild at Windsor Castle. The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess’ mother were also present for this special occasion,” they captioned a photo of Harry, Meghan, sweet baby Archie, the Queen, Prince Philip and Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland.

Prince Philip actually got a sneak peek of the little guy since, according to ET, Harry and Meghan “bumped into” him on their way to meet the press for their first photocall Wednesday morning. But the real introduction came later with the Queen, to whom Harry reportedly gushed, “Another great-grandchild!”
As for what this great-grandchild will be called, well, there are two prongs to that conversation. First, there’s his title. Per the U.K. publication The Guardian, Archie — who is seventh in line to the throne — could have at least one title: the Earl of Dumbarton. This would be derived from the subsidiary titles of his father, Prince Harry. Another U.K publication, The Independent, added that Archie definitely won’t be a prince. Because Harry isn’t the eldest Prince of Wales, his subsequent children will be Lord or Lady Mountbatten-Windsor.
The second prong to Archie’s full name is its potential meaning. As far as we can tell, this is the first “Archie” to show up in the royal family (there are a few Archibalds, though). Therefore, it doesn’t appear to be tied to any particular royal family member. However, according to the Evening Standard, it is an extremely popular name for boys in the U.K. In fact, the publication claims that research indicates Archie could be the most popular boy’s name in the U.K. by 2025. The name’s literal meaning is “true, bold, and valuable.” A royal source told CNN that the reason Harry and Meghan chose the moniker is simple: they “just liked the name Archie.”
Harrison likewise does not appear to be a family name, although we say that tentatively — it literally means “son of Harry,” so it is essentially linked to Archie’s royal father. Both names play well off of the last name of Mountbatten-Windsor, which has been used by some relatives of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
