Prince Harry Opens Up About Meghan Markle’s First Christmas With the Royals

We were certainly curious to hear how things would turn out when we learned that Queen Elizabeth II had agreed to break a long-held tradition for Meghan Markle by allowing her to spend Christmas with the royal family before she marries into it. But all signs — from her successful surprise appearance at the Queen’s staff party to Christmas lunch with the monarch herself to her church debut with Prince William and Duchess Kate — seem to indicate that things went swimmingly. And Prince Harry couldn’t be happier.

“It was fantastic. She really enjoyed it. The family loved having her there,” the 33-year-old British prince told BBC Radio 4’s Today after the program aired his interview with former US president Barack Obama and the royal’s own father, Prince Charles.

The soon-to-be groom added, “[With] the family part of Christmas, there’s always that work element as well, and I think together, we had an amazing time…” It certainly sounds like the former Suits star got a big thumbs up when it comes to her new royal duties.

He also said that they enjoyed their time visiting with Prince William, Duchess Kate, and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. “We had great fun staying with my brother and sister-in-law and running around with the kids,” he told BBC Radio 4.

And while there were “plenty” of royal traditions that he had to explain to his fiancée, Markle apparently handled it all like a pro. “I think we’ve got one of the biggest families that I know of and every family is complex as well,” he said. “She’s done an absolutely amazing job. She’s getting in there and it’s the family that I suppose she never had.”

Markle was raised primarily by her mother, Doria Loyce Ragland, a social worker and yoga instructor who lives in California. Marrying into the royal family would be a big adjustment for anyone, but it sounds like she’s facing the challenge head on and settling in to her new life with grace.
