Prince William and Harry Reportedly Had a ‘Fierce and Bitter’ Argument In the Months After the Royal Wedding

In updated chapters in his 2020 book, Battle of Brothers: The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, Robert Lacey reveals new reported details about the tension between Prince William and Prince Harry.

Per People, Lacey writes that ahead of Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in May 2018, the brothers had worked through their differences but that their relationship got worse by the fall.

Lacey writes that at that point in 2018, William heard about the alleged bullying claims against Meghan from a senior palace aide. Lacey says that when William confronted Harry about it, they had a “fierce and bitter” fight.

“When Harry flared up in furious defense of his wife, the elder brother persisted,” Lacey writes. “Harry shut off his phone angrily, so William went to speak to him personally. The prince was horrified by what he had just been told about Meghan’s alleged behavior, and he wanted to hear what Harry had to say. The showdown between the brothers was fierce and bitter.”

Lacey reports that this argument led to William making efforts to remove Harry from the joint office they shared.

“William threw Harry out,” a friend told Lacey, per People.

In his and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah in March, Harry spoke about his relationship with his brother and father now.

“I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped,” he said about the period before he and Meghan stepped down from their roles as senior royals. “But the moment that I met Meg, and our worlds collided in the most amazing of ways and then [I began] to see how trapped within the system, like, the rest of my family are. My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave, and I have huge compassion for that.”

In the days following the interview, Prince William did not say much about his brother’s comments, but he did respond to a Sky News reporter, who asked “Is the royal family a racist family?”

William responded, “We are very much not a racist family.”

The brothers reunited in April for the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip.
