Prince William’s Response to Harry and Meghan Markle’s Engagement Is True Brotherly Love
True brotherly love. Like other members of the royal family, Prince William and Kate Middleton released a formal statement this week after Clarence House announced Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle.
Still, the public demanded more from the couple’s family members and close friends, which is why William—second in line to the throne and big brother to Harry—couldn’t resist from joking about his sibling’s buzzed-about engagement a few days later.
“We’re very excited, delighted for them both,” the Duke of Cambridge told reporters in Finland on Wednesday, November 29. “We’re wishing them all the happiness in this very exciting time.”
The first portion of the Duke’s response was similar to Middleton’s interaction with reporters this week, when the Duchess said: “William and I are absolutely thrilled. It’s such exciting news. It’s a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment.”
But Prince William, dad of George and Charlotte (and presumably the future King of England), took it a step further on Wednesday. “Personally, I hope it means he stays out of my fridge and will stop scrounging my food,” he said. “Which he’s done for the last few years!”
Indeed, both brothers live on the expansive property of Kensington Palace and will continue to be neighbors after Harry weds Markle in May 2018. Harry is said to be a frequent guest at the couple’s apartments, and by now, he and Markle have presumably spent quality time with the parents of two.
Food also played a pivotal role in Harry’s proposal to Markle, which took place a few weeks ago over a typical Sunday roasted chicken in Nottingham Cottage. The style of cooking is beloved amongst the princes, including William who revealed at a charity cook-off in mid-November that his go-to dish is… roast chicken.
“I do like cooking, but I’m not very good,” the future father-of-three said before judging the charity event. “I like a roast. So a bit of roast chicken or a steak. I like it medium rare. I like it quite alive.”
Jokes aside, William had some quality advice for Markle and Harry as they start their wedding planning journey. “It’s a fantastic process to go through, you know, the engagement, the build-up to the wedding,” he said. “So they’ve got a lot of happy times ahead of them and I think they’re very caught up in the moment, and I wish them all the happiness and success in planning the wedding. I hope it goes really well.”
