'The Princess Bride' Cast Is Reuniting For a Virtual Script Reading
2020 seems to be the year of Princess Bride. In June, celebrities including Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas reenacted the 1987 classic for a fundraiser for World Central Kitchen. Now, the original cast of the movie will reunite for a virtual script reading. The September 13 reading, set for 6 p.m. CT, is a fundraiser for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and will feature Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, and Billy Crystal.
Anyone can attend the livestreamed event if they donate to the fundraiser. Elwes, who played Westley in the film, said the following in a statement, via Deadline:
"I think most people are aware by now that Donald Trump has completely abdicated his duties as President to represent and stand up for all Americans. He has failed to keep the country safe from COVID-19 and as a result he is responsible for the devastating chaos, violence and economic collapse that we are now experiencing. If America is going to have a real chance at healing we must get rid of Trump. And that is only possible if we win Wisconsin. I am thrilled to be part of this very rare reunion of my colleagues from The Princess Bride as a way to increase awareness and garner resources for the state that will determine the fate of America."
Wisconsin is a battleground state, infamous for its history of gerrymandering; Donald Trump won the state in 2016.
"The 2020 election is just like The Princess Bride: giants, monsters, chases, escapes, miracles," Ben Wikler, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, said. "We're thrilled that some of the world's greatest stars are joining us to relive the magic of my favorite movie in the world and help us safely navigate the fire swamp of Wisconsin politics."
So, if you need some more Princess Buttercup and Rodents of Unusual Size in your life right now, tune in on September 13. Times might be dark, but this story never fails to provide some light.
