Princess Diana just beat out Kate Middleton and the Virgin Mary in a ranking of 'ideal mothers'
Princess Diana has beaten the Virgin Mary and daughter-in-law Kate Middleton in a British poll to crown the “ideal mother.”
The poll, conducted by ComRes for the Church of England, asked: “Thinking of well-known mothers, either fictional or real, or from the past or present — what one person would you name as the ideal mother?”
Though she only scored 5% of the vote, the late mother of Prince William and Prince Harry was the most popular choice named.
Surprisingly, the Virgin Mary only came eighth on the list, with 1% of the vote, falling behind “my own mother,” Mother Teresa, Queen Elizabeth II, Michelle Obama, Molly Weasley from Harry Potter, and Mary Poppins. (Two of those women, it’s worth noting, weren’t technically mothers.)
A number of mothers came in joint fifth place with 1& of responses, including the former First Lady, Victoria Beckham, and Middleton, who is currently pregnant with her third child.
The survey, involving 2015 U.K. adults, also people asked about the most important things mothers had done for them.
A third of people said offering readily available support, and almost a fifth (18%) cited teaching them to do the right thing. Teaching them the value of hard work and providing for everything both fetched 11% of the vote.
When asked if their mother had been a positive role model, 7% said yes.
“It’s great to hear that people appreciate moms way beyond stereotypes of cooking and cleaning,” the Rev. Dr. Sandra Millar, head of life events at the Church of England, told the Telegraph. “Being there for you, teaching and modeling good values, and working hard are qualities that inspire and shape lives.”
