Product Talk: Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson
If you’re going to invest in health and fitness products, they might as well be the ones that an Olympic gold medalist uses. We caught up with Shawn Johnson East, the gymnast who took home four medals for Team USA in the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, including gold on the balance beam. While in New York City with CLIF Bar & Company to celebrate the all-new Energy Granola, we did an Instagram Story with Shawn - who is also the reigning Dancing with the Stars season 8 champion - on her favorite products, from health to hair to travel.
Best Products: What health and fitness products are worth the splurge to you?
Shawn Johnson: “Definitely supplements and protein powder, I live on bone broth protein powder. Also, Ultracor leggings, they’re the greatest. Oh, and CorePower Yoga!”
BP: What food do you find especially hard to resist while eating healthy?
SJ: “Waffles. I live and breathe for waffles and pancakes so I’m trying to be healthy, but that one’s hard. I try to create healthy versions which never works out.”
BP: What CLIF Bar product do you always have in your cabinet?
SJ: “The Caramel Chocolate Peanut Butter nut-filled CLIF Bar! It’s literally to die for. It’s sinful, it’s so good.”
BP: You co-founded The Body Department - what is your favorite piece available right now?
SJ: “My favorite products from The Body Department are all their cheeky shorts, they have really edgy sayings on them. But I also have a new [health/fitness] product line coming out, and I can’t say what my favorite is yet because I haven’t debuted it, but there’s a lot of really cool stuff.”
BP: You have the prettiest hair - what everyday products do you put it in?
SJ: “I think the key for my hair is using a different shampoo and conditioner every single day. Or using the hotel one, that’s literally what I do! [laugh] But I swear by Oribe. I use Oribe Texturizing Spray. That’s about the only thing I’m consistent with.”
BP: Earlier this year, you went on a whole European adventure with your husband [Andrew East]. What place did you fall in love with the most?
SJ: “Probably Vienna, Austria. It was the most unique and just beautiful. And the food and the culture was incredible.”
BP: What items are necessities in your carry-on bag?
SJ: “I always have to have makeup remover or face wipes because you always feel really gross on the plane. And also a snack because I always get hungry. Always.”
BP: You’ve won Olympic medals, won Dancing with the Stars, made it to the final two on Dancing with the Stars: All Stars, written three books, and so much more - what’s next for you?
SJ: “Well, I am launching a brand-new brand, fitness- and health-related, in the next month. But hopefully in the next year or two, maybe a family!”
