How to Pronounce Prince Louis, Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Third Child

On Friday, Kate Middleton and Prince William finally gave us the announcement we’ve been waiting for. After four long days of waiting, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge revealed the name of their third child, and it’s just as regal as you’d expect. Their little boy, who was born on Monday, April 23, has been named Prince Louis Arthur Charles.

The announcement came with a lot of excitement, coupled with confusion. Will the royal family pronounce the name “Loo-is” or “Loo-ee”? We looked back through history to find out.

Prince Louis of Cambridge is likely named after Prince Philip’s uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was tragically killed by the Irish Republican Army in 1979. Little Prince Louis also shares his first name with his older brother Prince George, whose full name is George Alexander Louis, and his dad Prince William, whose full name is William Arthur Philip Louis. All three royals pronounce “Louis” the French way, saying “Loo-ee” rather than “Loo-is.”

The name is originally French, and so the royal family—as well as most Brits—pronounce it the French way. Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson is a prime example, and he’s seemingly thrilled to be sharing a name with the royal baby. “Young Louis welcome to the world. I’ll take you under my wing lad. The Adidas tracksuit is in the post!” he wrote on Twitter. For all us Americans, we can assume that means “in the mail.”

Maybe the newborn prince has some goodies from his other namesake, Louis Vuitton, on the way too.
