How Do You Pronounce the New Royal Baby Name?

On Friday, Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, finally revealed to the world their newest baby’s name: Louis Arthur Charles.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” Kensington shared in a tweet. “The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

Baby Louis was born at 11:01 a.m. on Monday, April 23, at St. Mary's Hospital in London, Kensington Palace announced on Twitter earlier this week. He weighed 8 lbs. and 7 oz.

His name means “famous warrior.” It is likely paying tribute to Prince Philip's uncle, the late Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was murdered by the IRA in 1979. Furthermore, Louis is indeed a family name and is both Prince William and Prince George's middle names.

And though this may seem like the end of the story, it’s not, because one big question remains: How do you pronounce Louis? Is it Loo-wee or Loo-iss?

“I need to work on my pronunciation of Louis. I keep getting it wrong and it sounds like Lewis. I swore allegiance to the Crown in 2003 when I became a British citizen, so I need to get my act together,” Twitter user Agata McCrindle joked.

However, CNN’s royal commentator Victoria Arbiter quickly clarified the question for us all, sharing on Twitter, “For my American friends Louis is pronounced Lew-ee not Lewis - silent s! #royalbabyname.”

So there you have it, may we never argue over how to pronounce the baby prince’s name ever again.
