Drew and Jonathan Scott’s older brother, JD, often appears on their popular HGTV shows. He brings both a positive attitude and fun sibling banter any time he’s on TV, but he recently revealed things haven’t been quite as happy-go-lucky off screen.

The 43-year-old and his fiancée, Annalee Belle, took to Instagram to share a very important update about a recent health scare.

“I’ve actually been quite sick for the last 13-14 months,” he admitted in the video. “Suddenly, in May, I ended up in the hospital because things got really bad...That event was so bad that I thought I was dying, actually.”

It was so painful, in fact, he even prepared his estate and wrote out his passwords for Annalee, should he not make it. Fortunately, he survived the terrifying incident. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning.

JD and Annalee continued to chronicle the many doctors’ visits, tests, and scans he had to undergo as professionals tried to diagnose his symptoms. Which, by the way, included a hypersensitivity to heat. “Anything over 69-70 degrees, I would suddenly feel like my skin is on fire, I’d start passing out, and I’d be out of commission for sometimes days,” he said.

“There was a few times that I was pretty sure I was dying,” JD confessed.

After meetings with neurologists and radiologists, they eventually stumbled upon Wishing Wellness Medical’s Dr. Scott Jacobson, an MD who also practices holistic methods of treatment. JD was able to spend several hours with Dr. Jacobson, and eventually they discovered what they believe to be the source of his illness.

“There was a pretty severe infection, and, of course, you don’t know how long that’s been there,” JD explained. “But he said that it’s possible it’s been there for quite a while, that that would have been setting off all these responses.”

JD has since started a round of antibiotics, and though he is still not completely well, he’s getting better every day. “I felt at times recently like I did before this all started,” he said.

Plus, it helps that he has something major to look forward to. “We are in the middle of planning the wedding,” he said. “I’m extremely excited to be married to this lady here.”
