PSA: Anne Hathaway Says We've Been Calling Her by the Wrong Name for Her Entire Career
Not to be dramatic, but have you ever had one of those life-altering moments when after learning just one fact about someone, you feel like nothing will ever be the same? No? Well, you're in for a treat today, because Anne Hathaway—the actress we all know and love for her roles in Ella Enchanted, The Devil Wears Prada, The Princess Diaries, and more—has informed fans that her preferred name is actually not Anne. I'll give you a moment.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2021, Anne was pretty triggered by Jimmy suggesting he call her the name we all know her for. She pleaded with viewers and said, “Call me Annie, everybody. Everybody, call me Annie, please,” before launching into story time about how a rookie mistake changed her life.
"When I was 14-years-old, I did a commercial and I had to get my SAG card. They asked me what my name to be...and so [Anne] seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, everyone would call me Anne," Ann(i)e explained. "The only person that calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she's really mad at me...like really mad. Every time I step out in public and someone calls my name I think they're gonna yell at me."
"The truth is nobody's comfortable calling me Anne, ever," she added. "It doesn't fit—I'm an Annie. People call me 'Ms. H,' people call me 'Hath,' so feel free to call me anything but Anne."
Please excuse me while I spiral over this info!!!
