Woman says public housing officials bar her from displaying 'Trump 2020' flag at her home
A woman is appealing housing authority rules after she was asked to take down her “Trump 2020” flag, which hung outside her apartment.
Kay Keenan, who lives in a public housing unit in Rochester, New Hampshire, displayed the Trump flag at her door on Independence Day. WMUR 9 reported that the Rochester Housing Authority (RHA) removed the flag a few days later and left it on her porch.
Keenan was unhappy with the decision and wants to be able to express how she feels about politics.
"I'm proud of my country. I'm proud of my president," Keenan told WMUR 9. "I'm sick and tired of not being able to say that to anyone."
She did not believe that putting up the flag was even barred.
"They don't allow political flags," she added. "However, that's not in our lease. It doesn't say that."
The RHA, though, said that it was a violation of her lease agreement, and would not be allowed. The New Hampshire channel reports that according to the community’s rule book, “residents cannot have ‘signs, advertisements, notices, banners or flags.’”
Jerry Grossman, who is legal counsel for the RHA, did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, but told WMUR 9 that it would be “cumbersome” for people in over 500 units to put things in common spaces.
"We told her it's perfectly OK to have it inside the unit, even if she wants to hang it in a window," Grossman told the channel.
However, Keenan is not satisfied, and plans to appeal her lease violation. In the meantime, she is allowed to keep the flag up.
"I live in New Hampshire. Live free or die," the woman said to WMUR 9. "So, I'm at the ...I live free, you know? I live free. I can put the flag up that I want."
Rochester Housing Authority representatives did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment.
