Pyeongchang Breaks Record for Distributing the Most Condoms In Winter Olympics History

Like any country hosting the Olympics, South Korea has no plans on being outdone by previous hosts. Exhibit A: According to the South China Morning Post, the organizers of the Pyeongchang Games are supplying athletes with 110,000 condoms, breaking the record for most condoms ever distributed at the Winter Games. To put that into perspective, that's 10,000 more condoms compared to the previous Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. And maybe that would make sense if attendance this year were a lot higher, but it turns out there are only 100 more athletes participating in this year's games. That brings the total athletes participating to 2,925, which means organizers are allotting about 37 condoms to each player for a 16-day stay. (Related: How Often Should You Have Sex?)

"Baskets with condoms will be placed at both men's and women's toilets at athletes' villages in Pyeongchang and Gangneung, the main press center, the media village as well as medical centers," they told the South China Morning Post.

The company that donated the condoms said they gave the hefty donation in hopes of "a successful hosting of the Winter Olympics and the prevention of the spread of the HIV virus."

"We don't expect the athletes to use them all," a spokesman added.
