The Queen Is “Deeply Upset” That 3 Out of 4 of Her Kids Got Divorced
Welp, apparently, the Queen isn’t thrilled that the vast majority of her children’s marriages ended in divorce. In a new biography of the royal family titled Queen of Our Times: The Life of Queen Elizabeth II, author Robert Hardman says the fact that three out of her four kids got divorced was extremely upsetting to Her Majesty and she was filled with “despair.” Which seems like a kinda strong word, but okay!
“Outwardly stoical, as ever, the Queen was finding the divorce talks deeply upsetting,” Hardman wrote, via Page Six. “Another former member of the Household recalls that, every now and then, there would be a glimpse of her despair.”
The Queen’s son Prince Edward is her only child to stay married, while Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Princess Anne have all been divorced (Charles and Anne have since each remarried).
According to a palace staffer who spoke anonymously for the book, the Queen was “distressed.”
“I said, ‘Ma’am, it seems to be happening everywhere. This is almost common practice,’” he said. “But she just said, ‘Three out of four!’ in sheer sadness and exasperation. One shouldn’t underestimate the pain she’s been through.”
Meanwhile, Her Majesty’s former press secretary Charles Anson is quoted as saying the Queen took things in stride: “I don’t remember a single occasion when I went to see her and she exclaimed, ‘No! What next?’ The issue was sometimes embarrassing, but she got on with it. It is immensely reassuring in those situations to work for someone who isn’t knocked back.”
Let’s hope the Queen is actually as chill as Anson claims, because there’s been a lot of drama in the royal family lately.
