Queen Elizabeth Canceled All Her Birthday Celebrations Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic
Queen Elizabeth canceled the gun salute that takes place on her birthday.
She’s turning 94 years old next week.
One of the many consequences of everyone being stuck at home during quarantine is that birthday parties and celebrations have been majorly downgraded. And that’s especially true for Queen Elizabeth, who usually has a whole parade to celebrate her birthday (it’s just one of the many perks of being the Queen of England!).
The Queen previously canceled Trooping the Colour (aka her big b-day parade), but with her birthday coming up on Tuesday, it’s being reported that she also canceled the gun salute that usually marks her birthday. A royal source tells People that the Queen didn’t feel it was “appropriate” at the moment, which certainly tracks! The outlet shares:
“She was keen that no special measures were put in place for gun salutes as she didn’t think it is appropriate in the current lockdown circumstances when people are being requested not to gather and to stay at home. It is thought that it’s the first time in her reign that the salutes have not taken place.”
Considering that we’re all isolating in order to keep our communities safe during this pandemic, it makes sense that the Queen wouldn’t want anyone to leave their home for any nonessential reasons. The Queen is taking self-isolation very seriously and even said in her coronavirus address to the UK, “Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones, but now as then, we know deep down that it is the right thing to do.”
