Queen Elizabeth Offers "Deepest Sympathies" to People Affected By the California Wildfires
This weekend, Queen Elizabeth has issued a heartfelt statement offering her sympathies for the victims of the on-going wildfires in California and her prayers for the first responders.
The British monarch often offers statements of support following natural disasters, but it should also be noted that the Golden State now holds a special place in the Queen's heart, as it is where her granddaughter-in-law Meghan Markle was born and grew up.
“Prince Philip and I offer our deepest sympathies to the people of California, who continue to suffer from the devastating fires across the state," she writes in the statement, which was officially issued to the President of the United States of America.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims, and to all those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. I pay tribute to the courage and dedication of the US emergency services and the volunteers that have provided support."
The Queen then signs the message, "Elizabeth R," which stands for Elizabeth Regina (Latin for Queen), and is how the Queen signs official documents.
On Saturday, it was reported by officials that the fire is still only 55% contained, and they expect it to be fully contained by the end of the month. Thus far, the fire has reportedly burned through 148,000 acres.
Also on Saturday, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea confirmed that at least 79 people have died in wildfires in the state over the past few weeks. Approximately 1,300 people are currently missing.
