Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip Receive Coronavirus Vaccinations
Since the U.K. began its COVID vaccination program at the end of last year, there has been much speculation as to when the 94-year-old Queen and 99-year-old Prince Philip would be vaccinated. Today, Buckingham Palace announced that they have both received a vaccination at Windsor Castle where they are staying.
“The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have today received Covid-19 vaccinations,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said in a statement at 3 p.m. today. A source confirmed that the immunization was administered by a household doctor at the Berkshire royal residence.
It had previously been suggested that the palace would not make public if and when the couple had the vaccine as it was considered a private medical matter. However, the Queen decided to let it be known in order to prevent inaccuracies and further speculation.
The vaccination action rollout in the U.K. is well underway, with many pensioners of the Queen and Philip’s age having already been immunized. The British government is encouraging everyone invited to take up the offer of the jab as the country remains in lockdown and coronavirus deaths continue to rise.
The latest NHS figures available show that by the week ending January 3, a total of 1,112,866 vaccines had been administered since the program began in the U.K on December 8. The Queen and Philip have been at Windsor Castle for the majority of the pandemic with the Queen conducting engagements and audiences via video.
