Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to Spend Time at Sandringham Following Their Balmoral Summer Stay
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are expected to spend time at their Sandringham estate following their end-of-summer Balmoral stay, according to a new press release from Buckingham Palace.
The press release also revealed that Queen Elizabeth could return to Buckingham Palace this year for special audiences and engagements as long as they follow the U.K.'s COVID-19 protocol.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's summer stay at Balmoral is coming to a close.
Today, Buckingham Palace revealed how the queen and Duke of Edinburgh would be spending the remainder of the year amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Before spending the last few weeks at Balmoral, as they traditionally do every summer, the monarch and her husband were sheltering in place at Windsor Castle, with other notable members of the royal family also following social distance protocol and quarantining in their own homes.
According to an official press release, the queen and Philip will spend time at their Sandringham estate—where they spend Christmas every year—following their Balmoral stay. From there, the monarch is expected to return to Windsor Castle come October and will return to Buckingham Palace only for specific events.

"The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will depart Balmoral Castle during the week commencing 14th September to spend time privately on the Sandringham estate," read the official press release. "Subject to the finalisation of the autumn programme, Her Majesty's intention is to return to Windsor Castle in October and to resume the use of Buckingham Palace for selected audiences and engagements. These plans will be kept under review and will of course be subject to all relevant guidance and advice."
Since the start of the pandemic when nations across the globe began shutting down to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, the queen has made only brief public appearances for the sake of her safety. Among those appearances, the sovereign honored 100-year-old Captain Tom Moore with a knighthood for his fundraising of millions of dollars for COVID-19 relief and served as the guest of honor at the surprise royal wedding for her granddaughter Princess Beatrice.
