The Queen is Joined By Dog Candy To View Jubilee Cards Ahead of 70th Anniversary
She may be spending her time in a Covid-safe bubble, but the Queen was still able to bring a special friend along when she sat down to view cards from royal jubilee well-wishers — her beloved dorgi, Candy.
This Sunday, February 6, Queen Elizabeth II will mark the 70th anniversary of her ascent to the throne after the death of her father, King George VI, and the monarch recently spent time at Windsor Castle viewing a display of handmade cards and artwork celebrating her impressive reign.
But while the display featuring items from the royal archives was arranged just for Her Majesty, she was more than happy to let her pet join the fun. "And where did you come from?" she smiled as the pooch waddled into the castle’s Oak Room. "I know what you want," she laughed, before calling the corgi-dachshund mix over to give her a playful stroke.
Laid out in front of the royal was a selection of cards—some for this anniversary and some from her 2002 Golden Jubilee—including one made by a young child from bottle caps with the caption, "Ma'am You're The Tops."
"That's good, simple but ingenious," the Queen said to Dr Stella Panayotova, the librarian and assistant keeper of the royal archives who curated the items.
She also giggled when she saw a colorful letter from a nine-year-old boy called Chris, titled "A Recipe For A Perfect Queen," which listed ingredients including "500ml of royal blood" and "a dab of jewels and posh gowns." "That’s quite fun, isn’t it," she remarked.
The Queen—who has been staying in Norfolk since January—also saw some older pieces from the Royal Collection brought out, including a fan presented to Queen Victoria on her Golden Jubilee in 1887, which had been signed by family members and close friends. Opening and closing the antique item, she remarked, "Extraordinary, isn't it? And it still shuts!"
While her royal milestone will officially be celebrated over four days of celebrations this June, Sunday’s anniversary will also be a poignant moment for the monarch as her father passed away on the same day. In a touching tribute to King George VI, she can be seen in photographs from the viewing wearing two Boucheron aquamarine and diamond brooches gifted to her by her "papa" on her 18th birthday in 1944.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Queen will spend Sunday quietly and privately reflecting on the special moment at the Sandringham estate's Wood Farm, the property where Prince Philip enjoyed much of his retirement. February 6 will be the monarch's first Accession Day since the late Duke of Edinburgh passed away last April.
Throughout her seven-decade reign, the Queen has owned more than 30 corgis. She now has three dogs living with her—Candy, who is believed to be around 13-years-old, corgi Muick, plus a puppy which replaced Fergus the dorgi puppy, who passed away last May.
