This Is the Real Story Behind Those Alarming Lady Gaga Tweets

Little monsters are waiting not-so-patiently for Lady Gaga's new album, Chromatica, which had to have its release date pushed because of the coronavirus pandemic. But while they're listening to "Stupid Love" on a loop and learning all the choreography from the trippy video, Gaga spoke about some of her past antics, telling InStyle that some of her more memorable tweets were actually just attempts at gaming the system.

Fans will remember when she posted simple one-letter messages ("f") and bold (or nonsensical, depending on how you looked at things) statements such as "I don't remember Artpop." In our May cover story, Gaga explained that it was all an effort to figure out how the social media platforms worked.

"I'm trying to crack the code that is the algorithm of the internet, and I will do so in various ways," she said. "You may not always understand why an 'f' tweet gets that many likes. Who knows why? It was just a social experiment. I'm trying to understand people."

She went on to say that her tweets generally come from a real place, whether that's her personal or professional life. She adds that while she's active on social media, she's not obsessed with it and isn't paying attention to all the likes and comments. She's always curious, however, about the idea of social media in general and wondering whether or not Twitter and Facebook managed to become what their creators intended from the very start.

"I post some things from my personal life, I post some things from my business life, I post some things from my musical life," she said. "But I will say that I'm not super-obsessed with reading comments or counting likes or making sure everybody loves everything. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if the people who invented social media all got in a room and went, 'Let's start something where nobody has to be brave and ever.'"
