Can you really cool your home by leaving the garage door open in NJ? Experts weigh in
This summer New Jersey residents have been hit with one too many heat domes and heatwaves.
Especially during a season that already sees an uptick on their electricity bill. The average monthly electric bill in the Garden State is $97.53, but during the summer, that inflates to $167.44 according to a report. That's close to $70 a month.
A day at the beach or the local pool can cool you down but how about your home?
Apparently homeowners and renters have come up with a solution to beat the heat by leaving their garage door slightly cracked open a few inches to allow the garage to vent. This particular myth should help lower the temperatures in the home.
But does it work?
Experts from D Bar Garage Doors provide answers.
Is keeping the garage door cracked an effective way to cool a house?
Yes. "Cracking the door will indeed benefit and alleviate the heat that builds up but this may not work for all homeowners or renters," D Bar Garage Doors experts said.
The key is to have a well-maintained and properly insulated garage. And another factor is to make sure there is a cross breeze so that hot air is being blown out and not added in.
Air conditioning tips
Change your air filter frequently or what the recommended timeframe is for your unit.
Clean your vents and or you ducts.
Utilize your fans, including ceiling and floor fans, to keep air circulating and help the house feel several degrees cooler.
Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible to avoid letting outside air heat up the house and making your AC work harder.
Adjust your thermostat when you leave the home. Keeping it at a higher temperature will give your air conditioner a chance to rest.
