The Reason Why Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith Don’t Say They’re Married Anymore
While Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have more than two decades of marital experience together, the A-list couple prefers to avoid the use of the “M” word (marriage) when describing their relationship.
In a new interview with TIDAL’s Rap Radar, the former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air standout explained why they opt out of traditional descriptors for each other. “We don’t even say we’re married anymore. We refer to ourselves as ‘life partners,’” he said. “You get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life.”
He elaborated, “There’s no deal breakers. There’s nothing she could do. Ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support [until] death, and it feels so good to get to that space.”
The couple married in December 1997 and recently marked their 20-year anniversary. “When you see couples that have been together long… and you have that look between them, you just know,” the actor told E! News last December. “If you haven’t been with somebody that long, you just can’t really say the thing where you get to that place. [It’s] where you find the magic in the mundane, where you’re not seeking the high stimulus and all of that ravaging, craving. It’s just really simple and really easy, you know? It’s certainly not what I pictured in my mind…what it’s supposed to be. It’s like, unconditional love is a whole lot harder and different than it looks in the movies.”
Smith recently released a new song entitled “In the Clique,” which squashes split rumors and more. He touched on releasing more music in his latest podcast interview with TIDAL and how it’s helped him in his creative process. “I just started writing again… Just trying to find the way to say the stuff that’s in my mind,” he added. “I’m burning again creatively and I have outlets I’ve never had before.”
Will and Jada are parents to Jaden, 19, and Willow, 17, as well as the actor’s son, Trey, 25, from his former relationship.
