Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Gwyneth Paltrow, and More Throwback to Their Iconic Roles in New IG Trend
Actresses Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Drew Barrymore, and more share clips of roles they’ve played in the past and the names they go by in a new Instagram trend.
Actress Alicia Silverstone started the trend on Instagram, inspiring others to make Instagram Reels showing clips of the characters they played to the song That’s Not My Name by The Ting Tings.
Idina Menzel is the latest to take part, poking fun at John Travolta’s mistake at the 2014 Oscars where he called her “Adele Dazeem.”
Do you remember all the roles your favorite actors have played over the years? Probably not (there are so many!). The latest Instagram trend, started by actress Alicia Silverstone, has us all reminiscing on our favorite stars’ iconic roles to the beat of That’s Not My Name by The Ting Tings. Celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Drew Barrymore, and more took on the challenge.
Silverstone started by posting an Instagram Reel set to the early 2000’s pop song with the text overlay of “My name is Alicia, but they call me…,” and she added short clips from some of her well-known roles with the name of the character she played.
Silverstone reminded fans of her iconic leading role of Cher in Clueless, Batgirl from Batman & Robin, and Kristy’s Mom, referring to her current recurring role as Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer in the Netflix series The Baby-Sitters Club. She even added in a few funny names, calling herself “Aerosmith video chick” in reference to her appearance in their music videos.
Drew Barrymore
Barrymore was next to share her video and added to her caption, “Inspired by @alicesilverstone!” She then shared clips of her playing Gertie from one of her earliest roles in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Dylan Sanders from Charlie’s Angels, Julia from The Wedding Singer, Josie Gellar from Never Been Kissed, and Lucy from 50 First Dates, among many more roles.
Juliette Lewis
Lewis then responded, captioning her video, “When they try and say she plays a ‘certain type.’ #characteractor. Vid Inspired by @aliciasilverstone @drewbarrymore AND #thetingtings OF COURSE.” Lewis looped together scenes of her playing the roles of Danielle from Cape Fear, Mallory from Natural Born Killers, Kate from From Dusk TIll Dawn, and more.
Jennifer Garner
Garner followed, referencing Silverstone, Lewis, and Barrymore as the inspiration for her compilation. With so many classic roles we know and love, she shared just a few like Riley from Peppermint, Sydney from Alias, and Jenna from 13 Going on 30. Among other roles she has played over the years, Garner snuck in a few jokes about her characters, including “Farmer Jen” and “‘What’s in your wallet?’ lady” as two other roles she plays, referencing the farm she co-owns and the Capital One commercials she stars in.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Next was actress Gwyneth Paltrow who joked in her caption, “This ?? wanted in on the fun. @drewbarrymore thanks for the inspiration.” Paltrow shared snippets of her playing Pepper from Iron Man, Kelly from Country Strong, Viola from Shakespeare in Love, and her recent role as Georgina from The Politician. But beyond her acting, Paltrow also added “Mom” and “CEO” to the list of names she goes by on the daily.
Reese Witherspoon
With the caption, “Ok fine, @drewbarrymore… twist my arm!” Witherspoon joined in on the Instagram fun. The actress, who never seems to age, included clips from her roles as Madeline from Big Little Lies, Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, Melanie Smooter from Sweet Home Alabama, Bradley Jackson from The Morning Show, and many more.
Halle Berry
Halle Berry chimed in next to share all the roles she’s played, joking in the caption that she’ll “answer to them all.” Berry included snippets from her roles as Patience in Catwoman, Storm from X-Men, Jinx from Die Another Day, and many more.
Idina Menzel
The latest to take part in the trend is Idina Menzel, who first shared her Broadway role as Elphaba from Wicked, followed by Maureen from Rent, Elsa from the movie Frozen, and more. She then finished the clip with the iconic moment when John Travolta accidentally introduced her as “Adele Dazeem” at the 2014 Oscars, adding question marks on the screen to indicate the confusion.
We can’t wait to see what celebs join in on the fun next!
