The first time she saw a 'big girl bikini' is the moment Lizzo felt represented by fashion
Following LOFT‘s inclusive runway show at theCURVYcon was a panel discussion on size diversity in the fashion industry featuring singer-songwriter Lizzo. The ‘Good as hell’ singer didn’t hold back, sharing exactly how she felt the first time she saw her size represented on social media.
“I remember the first time I saw a big girl bikini ‘cause of Gabbi Fresh,” she said. “Like I could really cry right now because for years I had to wear the one-piece or there was the tankini, which you could try to roll up into a bikini. I like to call it a ‘fat-kini’ ‘cause I be rocking my fat a** in it, and I look beautiful.”
“That was really special for me because I finally saw myself in the media,” she explained. “I saw myself on Instagram. I saw myself on a blog. I saw a website, Swimsuits For All, where I could purchase something where I felt I was just as cute as a size two supermodel — and that made me feel really beautiful.”
Later in the panel, Dia & Co shared the news of its T-shirt campaign with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to fund size-inclusive fashion education programs, and Lizzo felt emotional about seeing her ‘Worship me’-emblazoned’ T-shirt modeled on the runway. “I remember I wasn’t able to find clothes in my size,” she said as she held back tears. “This isn’t just about big girls, this is about women everywhere,” she adds. “We all have insecurities and its such a wonderful moment that we’re out here celebrating our differences so that we could just celebrate ourselves as women.”
