Grab your popcorn, ladies and gents. The results are officially in!
Tonight, the 78th annual Golden Globes virtually took place on NBC. During the ceremony, Andra Day won the highly coveted award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
She was up against a slew of worthy nominees, including Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (played Ma Rainey), Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman (played Martha Weiss), Frances McDormand for Nomadland (played Fern) and Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman (played Cassandra “Cassie” Thomas).
The Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) has been around since the ’40s, though it was originally combined with the Comedy and Musical category. Previous winners include Renée Zellweger for Judy, Glenn Close for The Wife, Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Isabelle Huppert for Elle, Brie Larson for Room, Julianne Moore for Still Alice, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine and Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty.
Meryl Streep currently holds the record for the most nominations in this category, with a total of 14. She’s followed by a four-way tie: Faye Dunaway, Katharine Hepburn, Nicole Kidman and Geraldine Page, who each have six nominations.
The 78th annual Golden Globes were hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. They previously served as hosts in 2013, 2014 and 2015—however, this is the first time they did it from opposite sides of the country.
So. Well. Deserved.
