Restaurant owner in Greenville, home of Trump 'send her back' rally, donates profits to pro-immigration cause
While President Donald Trump was busy holding his Greenville, N.C., campaign rally — at which his supporters now-famously chanted “send her back” regarding Rep. Ilhan Omar — a local restaurant owner was celebrating immigrants by collecting a day’s worth of profits for donation to an organization that supports immigrants.
"100% of today's sales will be donated to American Immigration Council in order to help with the immigration crisis at our southern border and to celebrate our diverse community,” read the sign outside of The Scullery, a café in Greenville owned by Matthew Scully.
On the day of the rally he shared a photo of the sign on the establishment’s Facebook page. The nonprofit he was fundraising for “works to strengthen America by shaping how America thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system,” according to its website.
Scully told WITN that he had hoped the sign and the effort behind it would would help bring the community together.
Some users on social media, however, were quick to voice their displeasure over the restaurant's promised donation.
"Hmm... curious if this would have occurred on another day if Trump wasn’t in town. You may not like him, but he is still the president of the United States and what an honor he chose to come to Greenville!!" one woman wrote.
"I don't understand wanting to piss off your customers ... I've come here at least once a week since you opened. Why did you have to get political," one man commented. "You lost a customer."
However, most of the responses appear to be positive, with many fans promising to stop by soon.
"I live in Raleigh and have only been a NC resident for 5.5 months. This makes me so proud of my new home state. I have friends in Greenville and can't wait to visit your establishment!" one woman shared.
"Thanks so much for this and your continued support of the whole community," one person wrote. "Thank you for never discriminating against people, marginalized or otherwise. Thanks for working with all facets of the community. I will always support a business that supports the whole community regardless of religion, race or sexual orientation."
Scully did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s off-hours request for comment.
