Restaurant owner shocked by 'blatant ignorance' of couple who wrote 'don't tip immigrants' on receipt
A New Jersey café owner was taken aback over the weekend when a couple left a xenophobic note reading “Don’t tip immigrants!!!” scribbled on the back of a receipt and left it for a bilingual waitress.
“I am utterly shocked at this blatant ignorance,” Santiago Orosco, the owner of Under the Moon Café in Bordentown, N.J., wrote in a Facebook post Saturday.
Orosco said that though the server is American, he suspects the couple heard her speak Spanish to a co-worker. He added that the diners appeared to have an enjoyable experience, and complimented the restaurant’s ambiance and the waitress’s recommendations.
Their server didn’t see the note until she was going through the night’s receipts while closing up.
The server was “very distraught” and cried when she read the receipt, Orosco told CBS Philadelphia’s Eyewitness News. “Unfortunately, the racism right now, because of the world we live in, is a little more out there, but it’s not acceptable by any means,” he said.
In the post, Orosco writes that he’s a proud immigrant, as well as a gay man, whose restaurant accepts all people — “but not ignorance and discrimination.” To the couple who left the note, he says: “PLEASE DO NOT COME BACK!!!”
Locals were supportive of the Argentine-inspired café and the waitress targeted, offering to tip extra the next time they visit to cover the couple’s lack of a gratuity.
“How quickly we forget we were all immigrants once,” one person wrote.
“Well, now my family & I have to visit Under the Moon Café & support this business!!!” another wrote.
