Who owns Southern Salt & Coffee Co.?

Owner Laura Barnes, 42, was born and raised in Fort Pierce, attended Lincoln Park Academy and graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in family, child and consumer sciences and a minor in dietetics. She’s been married to her high school sweetheart, Taylor Barnes, also a Fort Pierce native, for 20 years, and they have two children, Berkley and Nolan.

Barnes originally opened Southern Salt Therapies, which was just a salt spa, in 2017 in the St. Lucie West area of Port St. Lucie. “I saw way too many clients coming in with drinks and knew we could be an all-in-one stop, catering to our clients with a quality product,” Barnes said.

She moved out of the old location in April 2023 and spent the next 14 months renovating the new location, a former 1948 home. “We love Fort Pierce and jumped at the opportunity to relocate the business to White City, an area filled with majestic oaks and quiet waters,” Barned said, “seemingly still untouched by the fast urbanization in our county.”

The salt spa and coffee bar gets its coffee from Rock Hill Coffee, a roaster in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Barnes said the beans come from family farms across the world, which the roaster knows personally after being a missionary for 20 years.

She also uses Sutton Milk in Okeechobee, Treasure Coast Bagel Bakery in Fort Pierce, Bread for the Soul in Fort Pierce and a local Future Farmers of America student’s raw honey from his own production. “We source as local or organic as possible,” Barnes said.
