Review: Color Wow's Dream Coat is the best anti-frizz treatment we've tried

Make your late-summer hair humidity proof with this "supernatural" spray that lives up to the hype.

Color Wow's Dream Coat kept my hair frizz-free for four washes (this is after #3).

I'll be honest, though the brand seems to stalk me all over social media, I haven't always loved Color Wow's hair care line. So, when I started trying Amazon's No. 1 bestselling beauty products for a future story, I was more than a bit skeptical of the efficacy of "Dream Coat," its award-winning anti-frizz spray. However, after testing it for a month, in both full-on East Coast July humidity and a few 90-degree, sweaty Los Angeles days, I have to say: This product lives up to hype.

Quick Overview

Dream Coat is an award-winning anti-frizz treatment that works at the cuticle layer of hair, rendering it humidity proof.

Color Wow's Dream Coat Supernatural Spray first launched in March 2017. Since then, it's become a favorite of both TikTokers (where it's gone viral several times) and celebrity hair stylists who use the magical-seeming potion to achieve a sleek, shiny result that's been referred to as "glass hair." Though it also works as a heat protectant, Dream Coat's claim to fame is as a potent anti-frizz treatment that, when used correctly, penetrates the cuticle layer of the hair, creating a long-lasting smoothing effect.

The formula is meant to act as a kind of glossy shield over each of your hair's strands, rendering them essentially humidity proof. Shoppers have called it "a miracle in a bottle," it currently has more than 50,000 5-star Amazon reviews and even J.Lo is a fan.

The application is fairly simple: You spritz on the lightweight mist when your hair is towel-dried and damp (the instructions say to go section by section with a generous spray, to the point of drenching). Next, because the formula is heat activated, you must blow dry thoroughly in order to achieve the desired result. That's it. You're done.

The effect of Dream Coat anti-frizz spray lasts 3-4 washes. So you can relish your soft, smooth strands without the hassle of reapplying every time you shampoo.

When I tried Dream Coat, I was surprised to find it truly feels like nothing — akin to spraying on water. It was not in any way sticky like other leave-ins I've tested. It doesn't even really have a scent. I have fine, thin, slightly wavy, dyed blonde hair. I'm also 51 and much of my natural hair is gray, which means the texture is coarse and highly prone to frizz.

After applying Dream Coat and blowing my hair out, it looked silky and shiny without feeling at all crunchy or weighed down. It was ideal for taming both summer frizz and my more wiry gray roots. But my favorite part of this product is how it lasts — the treatment stuck around through four shampoos. I was able to air dry my hair without putting in any additional product and it remained entirely frizz-free. Though you can totally use other styling products with Dream Coat, I found I didn't need to (When it comes to my hair, I'm also fairly lazy and low maintenance, so this all suited me fine).

I try hundreds of products a year and it's rare that I enjoy one this much. My only regret with Dream Coat is not testing it sooner — it's excellent for fine, thin, mature hair and I've found few products better for taming frizz without a tedious amount of drying and ironing. If I had to find a complaint, I'd say that it's not the most budget friendly. I've already gone through my initial $12, 1.7 ounce travel size and — since Dream Coat is now in my regular product rotation — I'm already burning through my $28, 6.7 ounce bottle.

If your hair is curly, or you're looking for extra potent frizz protection, Color Wow's also got you covered. Neither of the following products was quite right for my needs, but, the reviews are excellent and — if my experience with the original Dream Coat is any indication — worth a try.
