Rhea Perlman Gives a Surprising Update on Her Marriage to Danny DeVito
Rhea Perlman offered new insight into her marriage with Danny DeVito.
During an appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus' podcast, Wiser Than Me, the 75-year-old Cheers alum revealed that she's still married to the Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, 78, even though they technically separated in 2012.
"Danny and I, we are still married… and we are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us," Perlman confessed.
"I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, it was very difficult at first," Perlman said, recalling her split from the actor. "And there were a lot of reasons that we separated… It took time for us to come to this somehow pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other."
DeVito and Perlman, who graced the screen together on the classic sitcom Taxi and starred as a married couple in the 1996 hit Matilda, began dating in 1971 and tied the knot in January 1982. The two share three adult children: Lucy, Grace and Jacob.
In March 2012, the actor sat down with Parade and gushed about their relationship, which at the time spanned nearly four decades. "After the initial salad days, you get to be more than lovers and mates. You get to be friends," DeVito said. "We go through ups and downs, but if there is more there than what you normally think of as romance, you can stick it out with each other forever."
However, in October 2012, the two announced they'd be splitting up after more than 30 years of marriage.
Aside from working together on-screen, DeVito and Perlman also collaborate off-screen, serving as co-founders of the production company Jersey Films, which has had a part in the making of numerous iconic films–namely, Pulp Fiction, Garden State, Erin Brockovich, and Freedom Writers.
