Riccardo Tisci's First Burberry Campaign Was Shot by Six Photographers
It's just as all-encompassing as his debut collection.
When Riccardo Tisci unveiled his debut collection for Burberry last September in London, it became clear that his vision for the British heritage brand was not narrow or singular, but instead ranged from prim-and-proper Burberry classics to the streetwear-leaning pieces many expected from Tisci. And the former Givenchy designer assembled his first ad campaign for the brand using that same comprehensive ethos.
"The thing that excites me the most about Burberry is how inclusive it is — it appeals to everyone no matter their age, their social standing, their race, their gender," said Tisci in a statement. "So when I was thinking about my first campaign here, I knew I wanted to work with a collection of collaborators to help interpret the breadth of what this incredibly heritage house represents to so many different people — from the millennials to the mature, to the British and to the international."
To that end, he hired not one, not two, but six different photographers to shoot images for the campaign, which stars a somewhat diverse cast. Nick Knight, Danko Steiner, Hugo Comte, Colin Dodgson, Peter Langer and Letty Schmiterlow, all making their Burberry campaign debuts, photographed models Stella Tennant, Fran Summers, Claudia Lavender, Rianne van Rompaey, Natalia Vodianova, Irina Shayk, Sora Choi, Anok Yai, Darani, Matteo Ferri and Joe Plunkett.
Handbags — namely the new TB Bag, named after founder Thomas Burberry — are also a clear focal point of the campaign. Many at Burberry are surely hoping it becomes a commercial hit for the company, which has seen sales decline in recent quarters
Despite coming from a few different shoots, the images all convey a similar sophisticated-with-an-edge vibe, and hint at a new era for Burberry without alienating those who loved it before he took the reins following Christopher Bailey's departure.
