Richard Branson Has a Second Private Island -- and Yes, You Can Stay There
As you likely already know, Richard Branson is the owner of Necker Island, a vacation paradise he calls home and often rents out to other rich and famous people. But, did you know that like his well diversified Virgin empire, Branson also owns a second island paradise you can visit too?
As Robb Report recently shared, Branson is the proud owner of Makepeace Island, an equally picturesque island located off the Sunshine Coast of Australia.
As described on the island’s site, it’s named after former resident and “colorful local character,” Hannah “Shotgun” Makepeace. In 2009, Branson and his Virgin Australia co-founder Brett Godfrey transformed the island into a family retreat space. Then, in July 2011, the pair opened the island’s doors for exclusive rentals. In 2018, Radek Sali, Chair and Founder of Light Warrior, an investment group that “invests in businesses that are socially responsible & environmentally conscious,” became the third joint owner of the island.
Truly, the team has been able to create a space that embodies tranquility. On the island, each area is designed to emulate traditional tropical living. According to Robb Report, rooms include natural linens, plush furnishings, access to a pool area that overlooks the ocean, a fully stocked bar, and views for days.
And really, it’s little surprise the views are the main attraction as Makepeace is all about maintaining the natural beauty of the island.
“At Makepeace Island, we act as custodians of this pristine environment and seek to minimize our footprint on the environment,” the team explained on the site. “Organic produce, our own chickens and beehives, vegan-friendly amenities, recycling, and a wastewater purification system. Our farm to table concept is at the heart of everything we do. Our produce and amenities sourced regionally to support the local community and we work with partners who practice the same degree of commitment to long term sustainability goals.”
Of course, the island comes with plenty of billionaire-worthy perks too, like an entire island staff to cater to your every whim, a helicopter landing area, tennis courts, and more.
In total, the island can house up to 22 guests, the Sunshine Coast Daily reported. Though those guests, called “castaways” on the island, will also have to come with some rather fat wallets as the entry-level rate is $10,000 a night for a two-night minimum during its main season. That, Sunshine Coast Daily explained, breaks down to $1,250 per person per night. However, it also includes all food and activities, a 20-minute limousine transfer, and 10-minute boat transfer to and from the island. So really, you could be living like Branson and his friends for a steal. No previous entrepreneurship experience or A-list status necessary.
