Rihanna explains her 'rebellious' pregnancy looks: 'I challenged myself to push it further'
Rihanna continues to pave the way of modern-day maternity style with her belly-baring looks.
The 34-year-old singer and beauty mogul has been embracing her bump since announcing her pregnancy in late January. In her latest appearance for her brand Fenty Beauty's launch at ULTA Beauty, she continued to show her body some love while wearing a cut-out crop top with a low-rise sequin skirt and a belly chain.
"It’s been me personally saying, I'm not going to buy maternity clothes," she told Bustle at the event. "I'm not gonna buy maternity pants, jeans, dresses, or [do] whatever society told me to do before."
The expectant mother went on to call her style "rebellious," noting that it's a departure from what we're used to seeing pregnant women wear.
"When I saw women dress during their pregnancy [in the past], I’d think that that was the only way," Rihanna explained. "So I challenged myself to push it further and really just have fun with [maternity style]. Because there's nothing more fun than a challenge for me. Like, that's where I get creative. That's where I'm forced to come up with new ideas and new ways to make it work."
Her daring looks have been praised by the likes of Kim Kardashian, who shared photos of Rihanna wearing a sparkly bralette with leather shorts, boots and a jacket for a night out.
"Best pregnancy style ever!!!" Kardashian wrote.
Rihanna also got a host of compliments after posting photos of herself wearing a turquoise jumpsuit with a cut-out detail on her stomach. "Thicc," she captioned the slideshow on Instagram.
"You look soooo bomb!!!!!" one person commented. "Get It momma Riri."
While Rihanna's long been known for her fashion, she explained that her pregnancy has given her an "extra boost" of creativity. "And now I don't want it to end," she said. "There's going to be the other side of pregnancy, which is like your 'snap back' body, and that's going to be a challenge in and of itself. So I'm looking forward to being creative in that [stage] as well."
In the meantime, she's embracing the journey of pregnancy and looking forward to experiencing motherhood, including the difficult parts.
"Getting up off the couch, figuring out what I'm going to wear, wearing heels, getting dressed. Everything that seems simple is such a task right now, so I'm just going to go step-by-step," she said. "And it's not like I could run from any of what's to come. When I'm faced with it, I'm going to handle it like I know best."
