Whether you roll out of bed with a frizzy mane or silken locks could simply depend on whether or not you wore your bonnet to bed. It’s the nighttime essential that determines whether the drying elements of cotton bedding—soft to the touch but prone to sucking the moisture from hair—will leave you serving brittle-chic in the a.m. (and whether that spontaneous sleepover is really worth it when your satin bonnet’s back at your place).

“Satin doesn’t pull moisture out of hair the way cotton does, and it helps maintain the look of hair,” hairstylist Monica Stevens explains. And while they’re typically worn by those with curly and textured hair, she says absolutely everyone will benefit from the protective cap because it’s easy on strands and helps prevent breakage. By locking in moisture, a bonnet can even promote growth and extend time between washes.

When it comes to finding the right bonnet, the options are endless. You’re in no way limited to the plain black bonnet with the two-inch-wide brim you may be picturing. There are those made for long braids and locs, adjustable bonnets for those who like to switch up their look, and even some you can get away with wearing during the day, says celebrity hairstylist Yusef Williams—though when the sun's out, he typically recommends his clients opt for a silk scarf for what he calls a “Jackie-O moment.”

Whatever look you’re going for, there’s a satin bonnet out there for you ready to extend the life of your look. Trust, you’re in good hands with these expert recs.
