'Rise of Skywalker' Star John Boyega Mocked One of the Movie's Major Plot Points
Note: There are major spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker below, so consider this your final warning.
To say Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is divisive is the understatement of galaxies near and far-far away — so much so that even one of the major cast members is weighing in.
There has been debate among Star Wars fans about the movie's ambiguous ending, its resurrection of the long-dead Emperor and the lack of screentime for Rose Tico — and, yes, there are romantic squabbles too.
Fandom has always been divided into those who ship Finn and Rey, those who prefer Rey and Kylo Ren and the much more fun option of Finn and Poe. The Rise of Skywalker seemed to be building towards Finn confessing his feelings for Rey, only for her to share a passionate kiss with Kylo after spending most of the movie fighting against him.
John Boyega rather brazenly pointed out the hypocrisy in The Rise of Skywalker on New Year's Eve (December 31), now that's he officially concluded that hefty Disney contract.
The actor illustrated a "Star Wars romance" on his Twitter feed, accompanied solely by four photos of Rey and Kylo Ren trying to kill one another in the trilogy.
This brought out the angry Reylo shippers, to whom he sarcastically responded: "Star Wars is a movie, not a documentary."
Others wondered if he worried about offending co-star Daisy Ridley with his criticism of her character Rey, with Boyega insisting: "Daisy knows she isn’t the character. Lol so tbh she doesn’t give AF."
Boyega is no stranger to criticizing the franchise. Earlier this month, he complained that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson "could have done better" with Finn and Rose.
It remains to be seen if current director JJ Abrams will respond to his latest criticism…
